Courtallam and Golden Peak - Rain, Rivers, Falls!!!

Another trip with my Visteon gang, coincidentally it was in the same date as last year where we went to Vagamon as a bachelor. And, after getting the necessary permission from you-know-who I decided to join this year's trip. This time we planned for a two-day trip to Coutrallam alone then extended one more day and added Ponmudi. Why Ponmudi? Because that was the first result Google yielded for "hill station near Courtrallam". And, then we booked the stay in Coutrallam, a local transport, stay in Ponmudi and the return ticket as well, but the twist was our actual onward journey tickets were not confirmed until the last moment. Finally, we got the RAC at least and yes we began our one of the busiest trips.

The majestic, gigantic Meenmutty Falls, Ponmudi

The first day of the trip is where we covered a lot of places and it was one of the days with non-stop action. After reaching Tenkasi station, we are welcomed with some rain and it continued till we left. We checked into our room and got ready to Papanasam. We reached the top to see a dam and then we got into a river which was fairly empty and we practiced diving and I pretty much suck in that. It was almost noon, then we came down and went into the Papanasam river and let go off all our "sins', ("Papa-nasam", you see :D ) in that river. It was a fantastic dip, the river was flowing at a steady pace and it was raining on and off throughout. And, around 8 pm, our next stop was at old Coutrallam, once again after a heavy rain, we went into the falls and oh boy it was amazing and the falls were gigantic and I was a little afraid to look at it in that nighttime. And, the crowd was much less compared to my last visit and it was an unforgettable experience to get "hit" by that water.

Our next stop was at the famous Border Parotta to finish the dinner and then we decided to hit the PSS Multiplex in Tenkasi for "Agila Ulaga SuperStar Siva's" Tamil Padam 2 nightshow. And, then we were still not in a mood to call it a day. We went to "5 Falls" by 2 am thinking no one will be there, even the roads leading to that was empty, but we were so wrong. Everyone who has come to Courtrallam was there at that hour and Police were needed to control the crowd. So, we decided to check the "Main Aruvi". It was fairly empty, but it was because of the water flow. It was too much and nobody was allowed to enter the falls. So, we took some photos in front of that majestic falls and decided to call it a day around 3 am.

The Gang

That was a great day and we did way too much than our actual plan in just one day including a movie and bathing in a river, falls, rain, etc.

The very next day we started to Ponmudi as early as possible where we were surprised by ourselves after sleeping at 3 am. The first stop was again a dam at a place ThenMala, it was scenic unfortunately we were not allowed to take pics. Next stop was finding the liquor shop, it was somewhere in a middle of a forest. And, on the way searching for a cigarette, it was mini Va Quarter Cutting movie :D. Then, we reached our resort by evening after traveling through 22 hairpin bends and some fantastic view towards the top. And, whenever we tried to step out of that resort it rained. So, we spent indoor watching football, cricket and doing the "usuals", party. And, the resort maintained by the Kerala government was outstanding.

The next day we went to a spot in Ponmudi all we could see was mist and rain once again. And, it was time to get down from Ponmudi and visit Meenmutty falls which on the way. We almost missed it and had to travel back to that place. What we expected was a 10-minutes walk, but it was a proper trekking of nearly an hour in rain to reach that place. And, the view of that falls was absolutely worth it. It was so gigantic and that was the highlight of our Ponmudi visit. But, the water was too much we were allowed to take a bath, so we took as many pics in front of that gigantic falls getting drenched in rain and we left only when the securities decided it's time to shut the shop. We were so glad we took the u-turn to get back to this Meenmutty falls and then we started to Chennai with FIFA finals for the company.

Then we came back to Chennai by next evening thanks to rains which delayed our train and gave us a much-needed rest day from the office. And, that was the end of another awesome trip, it was water all the way rain, river and falls. We only missed the beach, if only we had a little time we would have covered that as well in Trivandrum's Kovalam beach. It was fairly busy without any dull moment or a boring spot, the last trip to Vagamon was so peaceful and calm, this one was just the opposite and both were fantastic.

And, then we are all back to the reality now.

Movies 2018 - Best and worst so far

Have seen *only* 28 films so far in big screen this year and the list seems little compared to the last few years. Thanks to the increase in ticket rate and strikes.

I feel Tamil Cinema is yet to see any "fantastic" movie so far, barring the above average IrumbuThirai, this year. Expecting a better second half. And, with biopics all around, Sanju in Hindi, Mahanati in Telugu and Captain and Aami in Malayalam, only Tamil cinema is yet to touch that.

And, have to catch up some movies like Raazi, Sammohanam, Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi, Ee MaYau, etc before the end of this year.

Nelliyampathy - So near and sooo good.

That was one hell of a looong weekend, a lot of things happened a reunion, a buffet dinner, a stand-up comedy show, a wedding, a betrothal and an awesome trip to end the long weekend. Only thing missed was a movie. So two things were off my bucket list, Alex's standup comedy show, where I bumped into my ex-MD, it was kinda awkward. But, Alex was incredible for two hours with his non-stop comedy, music, mimic, etc. And, the second was a short trip to Nelliyampathy. Been hearing about this place for a long time and finally, we went there and it was sooo good.

                  Pothundy Dam
The trip was actually a pre-planned, but also an unplanned trip. This trip was planned as a reunion of boys since one of our friend's is back from US after more than three years. After a lot of discussions, we zeroed in on the place to be Nelliyampathy, which was near to Coimbatore yet we haven't visited there. But, as usual, one guy backed out, leaving with just three of us. So we didn't go ahead and book any hotel and almost dropped the plan. Since I couldn't get a return ticket for Sunday night to Chennai and another guy had some work Tuesday, we thought let's go to "some place" on Monday. My first boys only trip after getting married and it turned to be quite good.

At first, we thought we could visit Aanaikatti, another place very near Coimbatore. While we are on the way we even thought about other possibilities like Top Slip or towards Pollachi. But, finally, we thought why not go ahead with our actual destination Nelliyampathy and decide what to do next.

Before entering the hill there was a Pothundy dam, and as usual, it was full of water like any other place in Kerala. It was almost after lunch and looks like it was the usual place for couples to hang out in that hot sun under an umbrella. We didn't want to embarrass them further and we left it and reached the check-post. That's where we came to know that we can't leave the hill in the evening it will be closed after 4 PM. So, we had to stay the night if we decided to enter. We were like why not, let's stay a night here.

We saw a small waterfall on the way up. It was quite a closed place away from the road and after clicking some photos ended up having a bath and it was refreshing. Once, we reached we got a hotel easily, it looked quite new and clean. And, in the night we went on a night safari off-road in a jeep, where we got to see some Samba Deers and Bisons. And, he stopped us on a top of a small hill and the view of the city lights from that top was breathtaking. We were just four members at that top in the dark, expecting some wild animals. It was surreal. Nelliyampathy doesn't even have a wine shop, you have to go down 30 kms if you have to find some. So, we didn't get anything.

                  "Karady?" Waterfall
The next day morning, we just visited two more places. First one was another falls, I think that place name was Karady. It was quite big than the previous and nobody was there. We were little hesitant whether to get in, but after some time we couldn't resist and it was too good. It looked lovely as well, we went as far as we could and the next place was a hanging bridge. It had a nice view and we took so many photos and some slo-mo videos walking in that bridge. And, the weather was just perfect after a little rain in the early morning. And, returned home by the next afternoon.

It was such a short, but a very fulfilling trip. We went without any plan or expectations, but the places were so good and more importantly without much crowd or I can say anybody else other than us in all the spots. It's a shame that we have never visited this awesome place which was less than a three-hour drive from our hometown, but better late than never. So, not just Ooty, we have another destination now in case we decide to skip town.

                  Kaala - பெரும் மகிழ்ச்சி

This is what I wrote after watching Kabali FDFS,  மகிழ்ச்சி, சற்று குறைவே. But, Kaala was பெரும் மகிழ்ச்சி. This is the Rajini movie I should have watched in the early morning FDFS show. It was very surprising that Rajini wanted to do another movie with Ranjith. I was happy to know that at least Rajini himself was happy doing a Kabali. And, Ranjith didn't really disappoint the Rajini fan as well as director Ranjith's fan in me. I feel this is the most balanced Rajini-Ranjith movie we can get.

It was like Ranjith heard every comment about Kabali and decided to do something about it. Right from the voice-over at the start of Kabali, I felt Ranjith's voice didn't suit and it was replaced here. Then, the cast, everyone complained about Ranjith is using the same faces in all his movies. So, he went for some fresh combinations here and it worked well. Then, the weak villain in Kabali, who was no match at all for the Superstar and he gets Nana here and their combination scenes sets the screen on fire. And, everybody felt the portions where Rajini travels in search of his wife was too stretched, though I liked it. Kabali had too many assassination attempts on Rajini and none were powerful. Even here there were a few, but each one was handled really well. Here, he does give enough space for some sentiments, but doesn't overdo it. And, the final product was one of the best of Rajini and also Ranjith's as well.

Let's talk about the ladies in the movie, Ranjith brings back Eswari Rao and what a power packed role and she aces it with an fantastic performance as Selvi which matches Rajini. Her first scene was enough to show her power, a long scene (single shot ?) which introduces us to the whole Kaala family, mind you his family was really big. As the lyric in Thanga Sela song says, "Nee illati naan onnum illa", it was really evident, wasn't written just for the song. Then, we get a reunion of ex-lovers with an amazing song Kanamma with Huma Qureshi, I really felt she was too young to be Kaala's ex, but she wasn't just for the song though. She was very much part of the movie, so is Anjali Patil. The way Anjali says, "oh you really want me to bow before my in laws", just thought how "Padayappa" would have reacted to that :D :D. Kudos to Ranjith for writing these roles in a Rajini movie.

Then, the next big thing is SaNa's songs and scores. Man, he just continues his terrific form from Kabali with his non-Rajini-but-Ranjith style sounds. When we get that Katravai Patravai in the climax it was terrific and so is his other BGMS especially for that rain fight. And, the way Ranjith uses Rap again was really too good like that "nikkal nikkal" before the interval.

And, Rajini was at ease here as Kaala, once again he surrenders himself to the director. The opening scene itself, he doesn't hit a six, he gets out without scoring a run of the final ball. Then, even after that famous "Kya re, setting ah" scene we didn't get a mass fight scene, his son and others saves him. And, then we get to see "mass" rain fight, just like the famous Badshah, after enough waiting. That was easily the theatre moment of this year. And, his "I love you di" scenes with Selvi and his awkward scene with Serina, keeps reminding us about the Rajini the performer. And, the "Kumaru, yaar ivaru" scene, waah.

The villain Nana Patekar, his uncanny resemblance to you-know-who and his scheme's name "Pure Mumbai", his favorite god Ram everything points very clearly who he is and Ranjith doesn't hold anything back he tells you everything clear about whom he wants to project as villain. It was surprising that Rajini accepted it, cos he was the one who rejected Mudalvan.

Ranjith's very clear about what should he talk about and for whom he should talk about. And, also what are all the cliches that should be changed, like Kabali wearing a coat or the name Kabali itself. Here, the color black and white and what they represent.

At the end of the movie, my only question "Does the Real Rajinikanth saw the Reel Rajinikanth's Kaala?"

IPL 2018 - Cee Yess Kayyy and the Whistles are Back

Cee Yess Kayy, Cee Yess Kayy, Cee Yess Kayy. They have done it. As I mentioned in my last year's post, that they have a job in hand since MI has three titles now. And, they gladly accepted the challenge and equaled the record. And, to be frank I didn't even expect them to make it to the playoffs once their auctions were over. But, this was an amazing journey, a very inspiring batting and leadership from Dhoni who looked at his best easily and also his off-field fun with his daughter Ziva, so no need to worry about 2019 WC like he answered that reporter.

Yeah, this year I supported RCB and just like last year they played very poorly and couldn't even figure out their best X1 till the end and finally crashed out without even making it to the playoffs. And, to top it all ABD is now retired from international cricket as well (is it because of this poor campaign?), I just hope he returns to IPL next year.

And, the runners SRH, they just couldn't figure out a way to win against CSK even though they topped the table after league stage and they lost to them 4 times. But, Kane rediscovered and proved him as an outstanding batsman in T20 and an excellent captain as well. And, also Rashid really set the IPL on fire.

Here are some of the memorable moments from this IPL which didn't have any hat-tricks which are more than usual in IPL and also no super-over.

As usual, CSK starts with a thriller (I've written exactly the same in 2015 as well). I have given up on their chase, but Bravo was mindblowing, came in at no 7 and smacked 68 of 30 with 7 sixes and when he got out just before the end. Jhadav who came back after getting retired hurt, who couldn't even move his feet smacked a six over fine leg to deny a win for MI. And, thus began an extraordinary IPL for CSK.

Narine, as usual, punishes RCB just like last year, he just loves them, scored a 50 of just 19 balls and that's a start of a horrible season for RCB.

CSK, coming back to IPL after two years, their first home game had more tension and drama outside the ground before the start and even during the game. But, they just edged out KKR captained by another Chennai boy with the help of Sam Billings, 56 of 23 and chased over 200 runs for another last over finish. And, that's their last game at Chennai.

KX1's captained by ex-CSKian Ashwin's first game against CSK was another usual last over thriller for CSK. Universal Boss Gayle made an entry with a thundering inning and Dhoni finds his form, but just couldn't get the team over the line. And, then on Dhoni was a different batsman.

MI finally manages to win after an excellent inning from Rohit against RCB, and for RCB Kohli played alone to score over 90, but wasn't enough at all.

It took 16 games for the captains to bat first in this IPL, KX1 did it against SRH and universal boss Gayle continued to punish the bowlers even Rashid with 11 sixes to score a century and they won.

Another, CSK game, another last over thriller this time against SRH, Kane played beautifully with Yusuf providing some support and Rashid Khan (17 of 4) played a cameo and threatened to take the game, but falls short. It was Rayudu, who can bat anywhere, scored 79 of 37 helped CSK reach 180s. And, SRH went on to lose another three games including the finals against CSK.

Jofra Archer who made a name for himself in the BBL finally debuted for RR against MI and MI's bad luck continued. Gowtham coming in at no 8, when everyone has given up on RR, smashed a 33 of just 11 balls and won it for RR. I wasn't expecting it at all.

And, SRH was outstanding with their defense when they score sub-par totals of less than 140. In their game against MI after scoring just 118, they managed to win. MI all out for just 87 and it was Rashid who spun it for SRH with the figures 4-1-11-2. And, against KX1, after scoring just 132 due to Rajpoot's excellent spell of 4-0-14-5. KX1 were at 55 for 0, but couldn't finish the game.

CSK this time pulls of another chase in the last over and this time Dhoni, 70 of 34, was able to close it with his usual style, a six. RCB's worst death bowling continues, and VK thought Corey Anderson could defend 16 runs who gave 41 runs in 3 overs.

Ghambir decides to step down as captain and handed it over to Iyer, who scored 93 of 40 to win start his captaincy with a win against KKR.

KKR moves up Shubman Gill finally after playing him too low for few games and he delivers with an excellent half-century to win a game against CSK.

Rahul was the only batsman in KX1, who scored like nearly 50% of KX1's runs starting with the fastest 50 in 14 balls. He scored 84* and 95* against RR during the two consecutive matches winning one and losing the other. Gayle's form dipped and Rahul single-handedly tried to keep KX1 alive.

Rishab Pant, who had an outstanding season scored his first century against SRH, 128*. He took Bhuvi for 26 runs in 5 balls (4,4,6,6,6) of the last over, but SRH chases it down easily though.

Buttler after starting to open rejuvenated RR's campaign with five consecutive half centuries and as ususal in a game against CSK he won it in the last over scoring 12 and ended with 95*.

KKR, on the blink of elimination, scored the highest score of the IPL 245 against KX1, thanks to all-rounder in town, Narine who scored 75 of 36. KX1 just crossed 200 with a surprising assault from Ashwin 45 of 22, but it was all over once Rahul was out for 66 of 29. KX1 virtually played with only one batsman.

RCB suddenly started winning and KX1 after a good start their campaign derailed. KX1 were all out for 88 against one of the worst attacks.
In a must-win game for MI against KX1, MI scored 186 and as usual Rahul chased it singlehandedly with 94, but it was Bumrah who saved MI with his outstanding spell of 4-0-15-3 in which he bowled two in the death and took Rahul's wicket.

In the end phase, RR without Buttler eliminates RCB and DD while ending their campaign with a win eliminates MI as well.

In the final league game Dhoni decides to play some tricks and sends in Bhajji, Chahar before him and Chahar even scored a 39 and they still won it to end a disappointing campaign for KX1.

In the first qualifier was such low scoring thriller, CSK was never in the chase, but thanks to du Plessis's 67* of 42 won it for CSK, but in the eliminator, RR was cruising along in their chase suddenly they lose the plot and gets eliminated.

And, SRH won the qualifier 2 to meet CSK thanks to Rashid's all-around performance 34* of 10 and 4-0-19-3 and a catch as well to seal the spot in the final.

And, the final CSK decided enough of last over thrillers and Watson from 0 of 10 finishes the chase with 117* of 57. And, fittingly CSK's best batsman Rayudu hits the winning runs to give CSK their 3rd trophy.

My Best X1 of this IPL: KL Rahul, Sunil Narine, Kane Williamson, Ambati Rayudu, M S Dhoni (c), Rishab Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah.

My Worst X1 of this IPL: Glenn Maxwell, Manish Pandey, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Darcy Short, Ben Stokes, Robin Uthappa, Washington Sundar, Corey Anderson, Mitchell Johnson, Jayadev Unadkat

CSK, 9 years, 7 finals, 3 trophies, one constant captain Dhoni. I just wonder how long he can deliver for CSK and will he be associated with CSK as a mentor or coach? It's hard to imagine CSK without Dhoni. And, it's hard to support some other team other than this yellow army. And, this team finally proved the cliche "age is just a number".

And, I just wish RCB to have a better season next year, just before the World Cup so our captain Virat Kohli will be in a better mood.

                  Premam - A Special Show

Premam - One of my most favorite movies of all time I swear. You can even check my four most favorite movies in my http://letterboxd.com/karthic_s. My friends at Kone and my old roommates know how much I was obsessed with this movie. I kinda singlehandedly made most of my colleagues to watch it at least once there.

I ended up watching it six times in the theatre, but those were the times I didn't have any Premam in my life. And, I was like if only I can watch this with someone special in my life. But, it was a lost opportunity. Even though it ran over 200 days here I kept watching it with my "pasanga" gang only.

Then came this fantastic opportunity to relive it again on big screen in this month of February, the month of love. I never thought this day would come in my life for a special show of a special movie with my special person. So, I didn't want to miss it and booked the tickets right away once it got opened. And, I was so excited as if I'm going to watch FDFS of some the most expected movie and a little nervous too since I want her to like this as well. I've created so much hype. Now, all that left was to make it on time and hope it will live up to the expectations I've created.

And, after some little hurdle, we did make it on time. There was actually only a fewer number of couples compared to the "pasanga" gangs, but the screen was 90% occupied. The crowd was mostly silent until the beat of "Kalippu" started. Easily the best transformation from a school kid to a college student in cinema. And, from then on there were whistles and hoots which gave goosebumps. And, no need to mention the reception Malar got even now, which was more than the hero Nivin himself.

It was all nostalgic, to see Shambu, Koya, Mava, Shivam master, etc and each and every character right from the start till the end. All I want is to watch the movie with the director once again and ask every silly question that comes to mind to him. And, finally ask him about his next, each and every one involved in that movie have done many movies already.

So, I was enjoying it as usual, as if I am watching it for the first time. But, the most important part was to know how she feels watching all this. Throughout the movie, I kept throwing all the trivia I know about the movie and about every character in the movie. And, from time to time I kept looking at her face to know the reaction and the mood of her. And, I think she did the same once Malar appeared on the screen, I hope I kept a straight face.

At the end of the movie, just like any movie in the MCU, asked her to wait till the mid-credit scene. And, when I came out asked her "Epdi?" "Is it worth all the hype I created?" Waiting to know the answer, as if I made the movie. I am so relieved that she liked the movie and understood all the hype I've created. Thank you Luxe Cinemas for making this happen.

A special movie's special show made even more special since I watched it with the most special person in my life. Finally, an achievement unlocked, which I never expected to happen.

Now, if only I get to watch my other favorite movie Minnale again with her on a big screen again.

                  Pongal Releases 2018

Gulaebaghavali: Started Pongal with an unplanned decision to watch this movie first. After a very long time, I went into a movie without even watching the teaser and trailer. So, it kinda worked in its favor, since I went in without any expectations and not knowing anything about the story helps too.

The story is about four cons tries to pull off a heist, a "puthaiyal", from a village and it is told with a lot of comedians and less comedy. I was expecting a ghost to jump out at any moment, but thank god there isn't any ghost here.

I really liked Revathi's character, it was a surprise to see her in this kind of a role. And, also loved the "Arengetra Velai" connect. There was her retro pic and also VK Ramaswamy's in her place. Among others Munishkanth, who kinda did more talking than the hero Prabhu Deva himself. And, he kinda looked uninterested, the usual charming was missing.

The songs were real drag should have skipped them and the visuals didn't help either, though he dances brilliantly. And, the romance between Prabhu Deva and Hanshika was worse than romances in recent ARM movies. But, at least the heroine is not a loose ponnu here. And, enough of Motta Rajendran doing dubsmash for some popular songs. I really wish he isn't part of every movie.

Overall it was just watchable since the stakes were really low and Revathi's character was a surprise which made me make it through the movie.

                  Neither funny nor a thriller.

Thaanaa Serndha Koottam: Special 26 was one of my favorite of Neeraj Pandey's movies. When I heard this is a remake I was excited, but the director kept denying the rumors. When the teaser released it was finally out that they have "adapted" the same for Tamil Cinema.

The problem with this "adapting" are they completely ruined some of the best moments in Special 26. Special 26, has a perfect screenplay, except the heroine portions, with enough twists and a fantastic climax. Vignesh ShivN added more comedians, songs, etc and the movie doesn't even look like a period film at all. Failed. When the heroine was introduced as a part of their gang, I thought Vignesh ShivN fixed the only problem Special 26 had, but he didn't. Again, she gets a separate track with some unwanted songs and who knows what happened to her at the end. Failed again.

Surya was having fun after his Singam. He even gets a scene to mock his height. Ramya Krishnan for Anupam Kher's character was one casting idea I liked. And, Suresh Menon with Gautam Menon's voice didn't work for me at all. Gautam's voice is very well known so it was little out of sync. Too much of build up for Karthik who did nothing at the end. Senthil with petromax light was a good touch, but he overdoes it too.

The dialogues were good and he conveniently mocks current situation in a period movie. Anirudh's Sodakku was good, the visuals looked colorful, which completely ruined the period setup. You can't show "MOUNTROAD 1987" to make us believe it is 1987.

Since I loved the original, he didn't fix the only problem the original had with the heroine character, added too many back stories and completely ruined the ending with adding some fights and the way he escapes was just too much and I really missed that Manoj Bajpayee's laugh at the end.

I am not sure whether Vignesh ShivN did all these changes on his own or he thought Surya won't accept the original. But, he sure makes things funny and colorful, which could have worked for the people who haven't seen the original.

Why fix something which ain't broke?

Sketch: One movie you still wonder how does this combination actually happen? Vikram with a director of Vaalu? You read these rumors before the movie starts, but it wasn't a rumor and this really happened. So, obviously, I had zero expectations with this combo since I hated Vaalu.

I made up my mind even before entering that this is gonna be a hell of a film because of the buzz in social media. And, almost the whole first half, except for the last 15 mins was so bad. Towards the interval, with Vikram finally putting a Sketch the movie picks some momentum. The second half was not bad either, batting the cliched romance portions with Tamannah. And, the climax twist was good, but the message at the end was too much, suddenly the director wants to convey something to the society it seems.

Thaman's BGM was a real plus, except someone shouting "sketch potta, sketch potta" in the middle. And, Vikram's screen presence was a real plus. Really liked him in this character, but still, his age is very evident, he is getting too old for the romance. He doesn't have to do anything special here after a long time.

I want to know, who wrote the punch dialogue, "Sketchu sketch potta sketch miss eh aagathu", I can understand this line and it sounds like a punch dialogue. But, the next line is "apdi miss aachuna sollu pisire illama senju mudipen". Is this even a punch, why would you miss your sketch and why would redo it if someone points out that you failed. So, will you put a "sketch" without failing or not?

I don't know what made Vikram accept this at this time, maybe he thought it is time to do a quickie. I really think if he doesn't want any experiment like I or IruMugan, he should try his hand with a bunch of newcomers like Logesh Kanagaraj, etc. I am sure they can do a quickie with a meaningful script.

Offers nothing new and didn't even try either.

My final ratings and best to worst, so it is evident that I enjoy watching Vikram more than Surya.
                  1. Sketch - 2.5/5.0.
                  2. Thaanaa Serndha Koottam - 2.5/5.0.
                  3. Gulaebhagavali -  2.0/5.0

                  Top Movies - 2017 ( Tamil / English / Hindi / Malayalam / Telugu )

Following on the songs, here comes my next post at that time of the year, top movies list (good and bad). Watched a total of 227 (http://letterboxd.com/karthic_s) movies which includes 94 in the big screen.

Best movie in Tamil is the one that released towards the end of this year Aruvi. In English it's COCO, the animation movie which made me cry. It talks about following your dreams as well as the importance of family and yeah with a fantastic concept of "land of dead". It also has some good music and some interesting twists. In Hindi it is Trapped, this unusual thriller which kept me at the edge of the seat with a terrific performance by this year's hero Rajkumar Rao. The Malayalam cinema or I would rather say the Indian cinema of this year for me is Angamaly Diaries. That last twelve minutes is the peak of cinema experience for me this year. And, Telugu cinema came to party in big way in the second half of this year with the raw Arjun Reddy, Vijay Devarkonda was mind-blowing.

Special mention to A Taxi Driver  in Korean and Ondu Motteya Katha in Kannada.

Also, missed a few movies which were popular and got good reviews, Aramm in Tamil. Parava, Mayaanadhi in Malayalam. Secret Superstar and Tumhari Sulu in Hindi.

And, ICYMI, don't miss this romantic thriller short streaming in YouTube, Germanyin Senthaen Malare.

Six among my top 10 favorite movies in Tamil are directed by debutantes. It would be interesting to see what they do next in the coming years.

                  Impressive - Must Watch: Rated 5.0 - 4.0

                  • Baahubali 2 - The most loved and most satisfied biggie of this year easily.
                  1. Aruvi - "Rooolllingg Sirrrr..." Aditi Balan gives a knockout performance of this year and this movie was nothing I have imagined. It holds enough surprises, laughs and cries. Love you Aruvi.
                  2. Maanagaram - "Naama Kettu Irupoma, sir?"  The most interesting screenplay of this year, the way it connects everything to a single point at the end.
                  3. Vikram Veda - "Oru Katha Sollata sir?" A commercial movie which doesn't take the audience for granted and provides interesting twists and clues throughout the movie. And, taking the "Vikramaditya and Vedhalam" concept and setting it with a cop and a gangster was a fantastic idea.
                  4. Power Paandi - One of the best feel good movie of this year, about a romance of an old couple. You will feel a little guilt if you're treating your parents the way Prasanna did. The kind of movies most often seen in Mollywood.
                  5. Theeran Adhigaram Ondru - "Mein Beiguna Sir" One of the best cop stories in Tamil cinema after a long time and it was a treat to watch all the research Vinoth have put into making this film which provided enough thrills and chills throughout the movie. And, Karthi more than made up for his dud Katru Veliyidai with an excellent performance as the cop Theeran.
                  6. Thupparivalan - "Ivan Thupparivalan, peyar Kaniyin Poongundran" I really liked the way Sherlock Holmes was adapted to Tamil cinema by one of my favorite directors Myshkin. And, also liked the way the whole thing starts, with a dog getting killed.
                  7. Kurangu Bommai - "oru katha solren, kekuria?" Another good movie from a debut director, which was a good thriller told in a nonlinear way with some fantastic performance from the legend Bharathi Raja and also from Kumaravel.
                  8. Oru Kidayin Karunai Manu - "Arumbadupattu" An unexpected journey, just a group of people decides to go to a temple, thinking what can go wrong. And, the things that follow was told in a hilarious way. Loved each and every people present in the movie. Really takes you that village setting.
                  9. Kuttram 23 - An excellent medical thriller where Arun Vijay fits to the role of a police officer to a T. Arivazhagan made sure to fill the movie with some interesting twists and thrills.
                  10. ‎Meyaadha Maan - "Neenga etha vechu kudipeenga?" - My most l-o-led moment in theater this year was during this scene when Vaibhav uttered this sentence. Another rom-com, but with brilliant characters and witty dialogues make this a wonderful watch.
